Turnaround

(designer Frédéric's luxuriously austere Paris apartment)(Brief Article)
House Beautiful January 1, 1999
Author: Petkanas, Christopher

A few years ago, designer Frédéric Méchiche gutted three minor Paris apartments to create one glorious duplex, and it has already seen two decorating schemes that are polar opposites. Here is the new mode' radically chic, luxuriously austere ...

"It was time for a change."

The French designer Frédéric Méchiche is explaining the dramatic about-face in his seven-room Paris duplex. "The first time around I wanted something droll, quintessentially Parisian, a bit like a stage set," says Méchiche. "I was mad about it, but in the end the rooms were too strongly decorated, marked by such a profusion of objects, pictures, and furniture. The look now is more ...

Directoire his way

(the Paris duplex of French designer Frédéric Méchiche)
House Beautiful January 1, 1998
Author: Petkanas, Christopher

Like the legendary dealer-decorator Madeleine Castaing before him, French designer Frédéric Méchiche lives in a Directoire world of his own making and says to hell with historical correctness. Period rooms at the expense of an important collection of modern and ethnic art? You must be thinking of someone else.

While Castaing's many decades of imaginative Directoire decorating first took shape at her landmark country house outside Chartres in the 1920s, the Méchiche equivalent has been developing for just a couple of years in a seven-room Paris duplex. Crisply drawn lines, sharply defined forms, the kind of fat eye-popping stripes identified with military tents, a ...

Quelle chance

(interior design work by Frédéric Méchiche)
House Beautiful February 1, 1997
Author: Hunter, Elizabeth H.

First-time visitors to this New York apartment may be so dazzled by the collection of pre-Colombian artifacts and contemporary paintings that they ignore the decorating. And that's exactly what interior designer Frédéric Méchiche had in mind: "I don't want a room to look decorated when I am finished, but as if it has always been there," says the Algerian-born designer, who did such a good job re-creating an 18th-century interior in his own Paris flat that some experts were completely fooled. He continues, "I want my client's friends to say, `Quelle chance! How lucky you were to find such a beautiful place.'"

After savoring the paintings, however, when these ...
